Le excursions in the metropolitan area<\/strong> of Cagliari offer an extraordinary variety of landscapes and historical testimonies, perfect for those seeking authentic experiences just a few kilometres from the city centre. From lagoons with pink flamingos to Nuragic fortresses and scenic sea paths, Cagliari's hinterland holds memorable surprises for the curious traveller.<\/p>\n

This area, which includes municipalities such as Quartu Sant'Elena, Selargius, Sinnai and Capoterra, stands out for its perfect combination of unspoilt nature and traces of the past. In less than half an hour's drive, you can go from the bastions of Castello to the forests of the Sette Fratelli Park or the Molentargius salt pans, populated all year round by the elegant pink flamingos.<\/p>\n

Historical traces between nuraghi and fortifications<\/h2>\n

The metropolitan area of Cagliari is home to some of the most fascinating archaeological sites in southern Sardinia. Among the recommended excursions is the path leading to the Nuraghe Diana<\/strong>, on the promontory of Is Mortorius, in the territory of Quartu Sant'Elena. This structure dating back to the 2nd millennium B.C. dominates a spectacular cliff and is reached by a scenic walk along the east coast.<\/p>\n

Another unmissable stop is the Nora Archaeological Park<\/strong>easily accessible from Pula, just outside the city limits. The Roman-Punic site offers an immersion in ancient history with its baths, theatre and astonishingly preserved mosaics. For those seeking less crowded alternatives, the Nuraghe Sa Dom'e s'Orcu<\/strong>, on the heights of Quartucciu, is a little touristy but extraordinarily suggestive place.<\/p>\n

Nature excursions between parks and lagoons<\/h2>\n

One of the landmarks of metropolitan nature walks is the Molentargius-Saline Regional Natural Park<\/strong>located between Cagliari and Quartu Sant'Elena. This unique ecosystem, protected as a Site of Community Interest, is home to one of Europe's most important pink flamingo colonies (Sardinia Tourism<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Within the park, it is possible to follow various equipped walking and cycling routes, such as the path along the Terramaini canal or the one leading to the Water Tower. The park has ornithological observation points with illustrative panels, ideal for families and birdwatchers.<\/p>\n

A few kilometres to the east, in the territory of Sinnai, a true hiker's paradise opens up: the Seven Brothers Park<\/strong>. Here, paths through the Mediterranean maquis lead to peaks such as Punta Ceraxa (1,016 m). The 'S'Arcu e S'Ollasteddu' trail is one of the most popular because of the wide view over the valley and the probable observation of the Sardinian deer, which is protected within the park.<\/p>\n

Breathtaking views and coastal treks<\/h2>\n

For those looking for a view of the sea while walking, the excursions along the south-east and south-west coasts deserve attention. The Capo Sant'Elia promontory<\/strong>which ideally closes the Golfo degli Angeli (Gulf of Angels), offers one of the most iconic urban treks: the panoramic path leading to the Devil's Saddle<\/em>. The route, about 2.5 km long, passes through junipers and wild orchids, overlooks the turquoise sea of Calamosca and offers incomparable views of the city.<\/p>\n

At the other end of the gulf, in the municipality of Capoterra, lies the Monte Arcosu<\/strong>integrated into the WWF reserve of the same name. This wild mountain environment is one of the most extensive in Sardinia and is crossed by several marked trails. The 'Su Predi de sa Jara' itinerary is one of the most accessible and crosses holm oak forests and cork oak groves frequented by wild boars and golden eagles.<\/p>\n

Cycling on metropolitan routes<\/h2>\n

Soft mobility is also gaining ground in this area, combining urban cycling and nature trails. The Way of the Shrines<\/strong>which connects ancient places of worship in the territory of Sinnai and Maracalagonis, can also be travelled by bicycle thanks to variants on dirt and asphalted roads.<\/p>\n

In the coastal area, between Quartu Sant'Elena<\/strong> and Villasimius, the Baccu Mandara-Terra Mala cycle path is a favourite with local cyclists. About 12 km long, it offers spectacular views of the sea and shady stretches in the pine forest. Little known but much appreciated is the cycle path in the Monte Claro Park<\/strong> in Cagliari, from which the Terramaini park can be reached, with simple outings that are also suitable for children.<\/p>\n
